Catalysis: Fundamentals and Practice

Liverpool, 13th - - 17th July 2009

We are running the EPSRC/Liverpool Summer School/Post-graduate conference in catalysis this July. EPSRC have agreed to provide supported places for “their” PhD students; essentially any EPSRC supported student is eligible for an award that covers registration fees, accommodation in Halls of Residence, and most meals during the conference. Travel is not included. This award is in addition to any other EPSRC supported conference attendance.

For “non-EPSRC” students, we are offering an “all in” registration fee of £180 pounds. This covers, registration, accommodation and most meals. Travel is not included.

Graduate Recruitment Fair, BERLIN

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to a graduate Recruitment Fair in Berlin, in March 2009, organised by Oxford University in conjunction with Cambridge University, Imperial College and the London School of Economics.  Our students and recent graduates, most specifically our German students wishing to work in their home country, will attend the fair.  German students make up a significant proportion of the international student population in each institution.

Theoretical Physics of Soft Active MatterA fully funded PhD position in the theory of soft active materials is available at the Department of Mathematics, University of Bristol for UK/EU students, starting in October 2009 (though an earlier start is possible). The project is part of an international collaboration and will require the student to spend a significant amount of time in the USA (Syracuse, NY) as well as to make a number of trips to Stellenbosch, South Africa.

L’Oréal UK and Ireland, the UK National Commission for UNESCO, the Royal Institution of Great Britain, the Irish National Commission for UNESCO, and the UK Resource Centre for Women in SET have partnered together to provide a dedicated UK and Ireland For Women In Science Fellowship Programme for women scientists at postdoctoral level to enable and/or facilitate promising scientific research in the life or physical sciences.

Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Studentship in CFD for Gas Turbines -Thermo-Fluid Systems University Technology Centre

Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Surrey, and Rolls-Royce plc

Starting date: 1st April 2009

The main research focus will be on the development, evaluation and application of CFD based methods for compressor disc drum thermal analysis. This includes development of models and stability analysis of complex buoyancy affected flows in rapidly rotating disc cavities. The research will contribute to ongoing developments in CFD and its applications to turbomachinery in the Rolls-Royce supported University Technology Centre.

Applications are invited for nine MRes/PhD 4-year studentships within the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Centre of Research Excellence at Imperial College London, to start in October 2009. These studentships will be funded by the BHF for 4 years, on a tax free starting bursary of £18,000 per annum.  Please note that tuition fees will be paid at the Home/EU rate. These are funded through a training grant from the BHF. There is no provision for overseas student fees..
